Fireworks, football, BBQ, butterfly

Throughout the night there were sounds of fireworks, large and small. Throughout the day, kids have been enjoying the legal ones: sparklers, plus snakes generating lots of smoke. It’s obvious that some revelers did not retire at once after midnight; some set their menu plans in motion, because at sunrise there was already the scent of BBQ that had been in preparation for hours. The streets emptied for the Aggies; now they’re quiet for the Longhorns. Two complete racks of Hong Kong Supermarket spareribs slow-cooked indoors have fed this household well. A monarch butterfly emerged from its chrysalis just outside the back door, one leg at a time. The wings have unfolded and are still drying. A new year has begun.
