Houston Chronicle: Texas capital goes from cool to Austintacious

The Houston Chronicle takes a stab at Austin’s current trendiness: “Once a city filled with a live-and-let-live demeanor, newcomers have made Austin more about pretension, wealth and attitude.” Ouch.

Because if there’s a city that knows pretension, wealth and attitude when it sees it …

Still, a good article. It made me think of the kid who goes to college and tells everyone to call him by some fictitious high school nickname:

“Um, hi. I’m Austin. But all the kids back home call me the Live Music Capital of Weirdness, so that’s what you should call me.”
    – “Humph, you don’t look very weird to me.”
“Heh, well yeah, because you don’t know all the CRAZY shit we do down there.”
    – “Like what?”
“Well … we just made it illegal for people to smoke in bars … ummm … ”
