For all your jump-up needs

bigred.jpgThere are other locally owned places that stock them, including Sledd’s and the Great Outdoors for sure and probably Gardens as well, but right now Big Red Sun has every known kind of Johnny jump-up or viola, including great numbers of my favorite, purple and yellow combined, with a real face.

These little relatives of the pansy (or pensamiento) are wonderful flowers for Austin winters, whether in containers or transplanted directly into the ground. Snipping the flowers is the secret to ensuring more blossoms all winter long. They make wonderful tiny tabletop bouquets along with a sprig of rosemary or thyme.

Austin’s hometown nurseries are great assets. Some favorites no longer exist, but there are constantly new ones waiting to be explored. These are some longtime favorites, each for its own reasons.

Big Red Sun is a party venue, a little shop for babies (or their parents) and the household (check out the bungalow), a floral-design enterprise, and a landscape-installation and -design business. It’s a growing oasis on the eastside close to downtown and a great place to stop for any reason or no reason at all.
