Not just the alpha

Alpha Music is the alpha and the omega of sheet music here in Austin. There are people who make a stop in at 29th Street just off the Drag a part of their weekly rounds. I visit only when out-of-towners are visiting me and demand to make the pilgrimage.

How long Alpha has enjoyed an on-line presence I don’t know. Whatever’s shown as available there is nothing compared with what’s in those bins and racks. The fun is in being there in person, looking for you’re-not-sure-what but finding it all the same. Some people make Vulcan Video part of the experience, but I never need to leave Alpha.

Our most recent Alpha pilgrim was looking for Elvis on sheet-music covers for that extra-special gift. It’s not NYC, but there’s usually a very decent selection of fake books, for instance. It’s closed Sundays. When visitors demand to be taken to the Drag, Alpha Music should always be part of the tour, if only for the sake of the tour guides.
