Take a Vacation in your own backyard

After a long week, I decided on a whim to get a suite at the Stephen F. Austin for the night. Just 10 blocks from house, I’ve been at the bar here many times. I’d never had a room there so I decided to check it out. I realized how fun staying in a hotel can be in your hometown. It was a mini-vacation and I certainly spoiled myself. The Stephen F. Austin is a great hotel at the corner of Congress and 7th.

I’m not much of a travel writer but I’ll tell you the staff is genuinely friendly and made sure my request for ice-cold Veuve Clicquot was no problem. The room service menu offered a wide selection and the robes were those great plush things you can only seem to find in a good hotel.

I turned off my cell phone and nobody knew I was only 10 blocks from my house and I felt a million miles away.

We’ve got some great hotels for a good price here in Austin, and if you ever need a break but just can’t seem to get out of town to do it, I can completely endorse disappearing into downtown with room service and a turned off cell phone. If you care to make a weekend vacation out of it, experience a restaurant downtown you’ve never tried or take in a show at the Paramount. There’s a reason people flock here.

Next time I’ll try the San Jose. I’ve spent enough money drinking in that sexy courtyard, I might as well see if the rooms are as luxe as I think they are.

My wife and I did the same a couple of years ago for our anniversary. Had Grandma take the kids and we got a nice weekend special rate at the Stephen F., and somehow we ended up in a corner suite. It was fantastic, I highly recommend it.
