Knock on every door

You can be one of hundreds collecting information about Austin from those households not returning the test census forms that will go out in the mail this spring. Yes! It’s guaranteed money for going from door to door.

Austin is one of just two locations in the entire U.S. where a test census will be conducted in advance of the big one in 2010. It’s farewell to the on-paper methods in use since 1790. This time around, information-gatherers (that could be you, if you apply and are accepted) will enter data on hand-held PDAs loaded with custom software.

Those accepted will receive training. The training is paid, and mileage is reimbursed. For most of the census-related jobs the pay will be $14.50 an hour and the schedule will be flexible. People will be asked to commit to at least 20 hours and up to 40 hours a work, depending on the assignment. These temporary jobs are projected to last for from five to ten weeks.

Linked from the Census Bureau site is additional information, including a map, an application form, and much more. Call 1-888-814-6711 to schedule your multiple-choice qualifying test. You may be just 28 questions away from making history and making money at the same time.

Great tip. The census-taking work starts in April, which is kind of too bad, since that means it will go on into May and June — too hot to be walking around, for me anyway.
