Let’s Talk About Swimming

barton2a.jpgIt goes without saying that Barton Springs Pool is a critical component, both physical and metaphorical, of Austin’s quality of life. Like most people, though, I generally don’t start thinking about Barton Springs much until the mercury hits 90 (as in degrees fahrenheit, not parts per million). But there are others who are more enthusiastic about the pool who are forming the Barton Springs Swimmers Association, whose goals are to promote preservation, protection, and enjoyment of the pool and its grounds through advocacy, service projects, and massive clothing-optional parties. In order to find out which goal is sheer editorial fantasy, you can attend the group’s first organizational meeting next Saturday, February 4th, at 2pm. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the pool, presumably meeting out front unless the group name is meant to be more literal.

Update from the Barton Springs Swimmers Association:

“We’re going to clean Barton Springs Pool on Wednesday, March 8. There will be three shifts, two hours each.

One shift 10 am to noon.
One shift noon to 2 pm.
One shift 2 pm to 4 pm.

On each shift we have work for four teams of three swimmer/cleaners. One team will clean the pool walls. One team will sweep the bottom of the shallow end. One team will clean algae off the bottom near the diving board. One team will clean muck off the bottom of the beach area.

You must sign up by 5 pm on Tuesday, so you can be on the list to get through the gate and into the pool.”
