Same Sex Partner Benefits for Austin City Employees?

The Statesman reports today that Council Member Brewster McCracken is about ready to propose same-sex partner benefits to city employees. The time has come. When first proposed in 1993 it may have been a little ahead of its time, but Austin is a city that’s behind the curve on offering same-sex partner benefits. We’re glad to see it cropping up on the agenda. Give your council member a call and let them know that ‘fair is fair’ and that’s what Austin is all about.

It won’t hurt, but it’s probably not necessary to call. From the article, there already seems to be at least a 5-2 majority if not a 6-1 majority in favor of putting this on the ballot. As the article also points out, this’ll add to the upcoming mayoral race since Thomas will be running against Wynn and Thomas appears to be the only council member who’ll oppose this.
