Soon to be monarchs

moncats.jpgLast night at suppertime there were eight of these striped critters. This morning there were still eight, only much longer and fatter. They had eaten all but the woody stem of the yellow milkweed where they were hatched. So we moved another pot of milkweed nearby and this is where they were photographed. If all goes well, the next stage will be a shiny green chrysalis with golden beads, and then, at last butterflies. They, in common with other backyard butterflies, are very tempting to predators afer they’ve emerged from the case and before their wings have stiffened enough to permit flight.
