Intimate portrait

This irregularly recurring feature is one of the best reasons to read ahora si!, the Spanish-language sibling of our local daily. The format is a full-page verbatim question-and-answer interview. My favorite previous one shone the spotlight on Maria Corbalan of Maria’s Taco Xpress. Last week’s issue contained an interview conducted by Rachel Lavin with Claudia Alarcon, a co-editor of the recent Zagat Austin guide and a writer on food for the Chron and for Austin Monthly. She says that her favorite Austin restaurants are Uchi and Vespaio, that the most romantic place to dine is Aquarelle, and that the best Mexican cuisine is to be found at La Fonda San Miguel. Recently she has been reading cookbooks by Patricia Quintana. She was educated to be an anthropologist. Her first kitchen job was at Threadgill’s, in 1985.
