Austin cameo appearances
The Newsweek cover story this week (Going Green; byline Jerry Adler) presents Austin as a paragon of green living, with two photos of city hall and one of the mayor up close and named and and including the city manager in the background and not named. “Among cities, few are as sustainable as Austin.” Praise goes to the rate of trash-recycling and to the use of electric power generated by West Texas wind farms. Not only that, the copper used in cladding the city hall is reported to be mostly recycled. Closer to the back of the book (Geezer-Pleasers; byline Steven Levy), we learn that the person who likes to listen to Bob Dylan, John Prine, and Doug Sahm will be advised by the MyStrands music service to try “underappreciated Austin-scene singer-songwriter John [sic] Dee Graham.” Of course, he’ll be a bit easier to find as Jon Dee Graham. I think of Jon Dee as a pleaser of everybody, not just of geezers.
