Better Late than Never…Yeah, Right

Went to sign my son up for Extend-A-Care at Zilker Elementary and it’s full! So we’ve been wait-listed for afterschool daycare–lame! They are hiring more folks to work, but they of course don’t know how long until the new man/womanpower will be ready to take additional kids. I guess I’ll be calling Dougherty Art School on Monday to see if their afterschool program at Zilker has openings. I guess I could have signed up a little earlier–what was I thinking…

Since it’s the last weekend of freedom before school starts for my son we’ll be heading to Longhorn Caverns for some underground delights. This place is great, much of the infrastructure around the cave was built in the 30’s by the Civil Conservation Corp, so it has a nice old style, which I really like. There’s a dining room and gift shop, but the best stuff is down a bunch of stairs that leads underground. There’s the pink room where tour guides years ago encouraged woman to write on the walls with lipstick–it’s still pink cuz they can’t completely clean it. There’s a room full of crystals, where adults have to crouch down to walk through. I especially like the stories about people breaking off stalactites for souvenirs and all the different uses the caves have seen–dancehall, church, Confederate gun powder manufacturing site and Commanche Indian living quarters. Longhorn Caverns is near Inks Lake State Park.
