RIP Don Walser

Don Walser, local country musician and yodeler extraordinaire, has died of complications from diabetes according to News8Austin.

Don hadn’t played out for several years. I’m guessing it was due to his health. He had a recurring gig at Emo’s back in the late 90’s, introducing “the kids” to some good old fashioned country music and yodeling with his Pure Texas Band. I saw him there a couple of times. He always had a smile and was a very personable guy. His death is a loss for the Austin music scene. He’ll be missed.

He had a wonderful regular gig at Jovita’s. His band was crackerjack. The Pure Texas Band included Floyd Domino and Howard Kalish among the luminaries, some of whom now play with Cornell Hurd, also at Jovita’s. Those were wonderful evenings and so were the nights at the Spoke.

I agree with Rantor, I really treasure the Jovita’s gigs that I saw. Don was one of the nicest men I ever met. Even while in some discomfort the last time I saw him (2001?), he chatted with anyone who came up during breaks and seemed to genuinely enjoy their company. And that voice!

    RIP Don.

We always took out-of-towners to Jovita’s on Don’s night, and they were always captivated and bought a CD before they left.

My favorite place to see Don was at Henry’s on Burnet, which has been gone for some years and is now an Autozone parking lot…

Don was an amazing singer and so nice, always thanking us for coming out to see him–like we were the ones who were doing something special–yeah right. It was Don who was so special.
