Latin music awards: still time to vote for local favorites

The second annual Austin Latin Music Awards will be announced at the Paramount on October 17. In every category there are four potential winners from which to select, and these categories are: best traditional Tejano, best musica nortena, album of the year, best male vocalist, best female vocalist, best new artist, best cumbia, best mariachi, best Latin hip-hop, best salsa or merengue, best Latin rock, and the best Austin band. Don’t miss the additional category at the bottom of the vote page, for the best high school band in Austin. For that one, there’s a pull-down menu instead of a set of check-boxes.

The awards event has a lot of local sponsors, including Univision TV channel 62 (or 31 without cable). For anyone not familiar with some of the nominees, there will be a feature segment each day on the local TV news at 5 and at 10 pm, as well as on Desde Austin, Saturday mornings at nine. These segments will include interviews and chances for viewers to win VIP passes. Tickets to the awards event cannot be bought; they’ll be awarded through the television station and probably through the sponsoring radio station (107.7-fm) and ahora si!, One hundred pairs of free tickets will be given away to an entrant selected at random from those who send name, telephone number, address, and e-mail address to giveawayaustin@univision.com.

According to the rules, winners must be over 18 and residents of Austin. As the date of the awards nears, it’s promised that information will be updated periodically. Since the master of ceremonies will be here all the way from the national morning show Despierta America, it would be a good bet that there’ll be plenty of live music, but that part hasn’t yet been announced. Yes; I voted for the school band with red and gray colors.
