Free and fun and friendly

First Thursday on South Congress can be a tourist magnet, though it’s sometimes fun to watch the tourists watching the locals watching the tourists. For music without distractions in a peaceful location just a couple of blocks east of the Avenue this evening, there’s the Austin Wonder Brass, playing traditional British brass band music under the trees on the lawn at the corner of East Monroe and Brackenridge, in the same block as Grace United Methodist Church. The band strikes up at 7 pm. Austin Wonder Brass tends to overlap in membership with the Wurst Band, often to be heard at Scholz’s at certain times of the year. For listening comfort, blankets and lawn chairs and a picnic basket complete the old-timey occasion. Meet your friends or make some new ones. You’ll be able to hear yourself think. And don’t forget lemonade.
