Jamaica under way

This annual event, fabulous and almost free, this year marks the centennial of the congregation of Our Lady of Guadalupe (say “ha-MY-cah”). It started at noon and runs until 10 pm this evening, at 1206 East Ninth Street, but don’t try to bring a motor vehicle that close. I missed the Reagan High School drumline but there’s plenty of music left, including El Montopolis Kid, Johnny Degollado, with his conjunto (scheduled for 5 pm), and Tejano stars Ruben Ramos (6:30), an Austin institution, and Jay “La Voz” Perez, up from San Antonio (8 pm). There’s always plenty of food, along with a great selection of raffle prizes. A mere five dollars is the price of admission. If this is your first time attending, you’ll be happy to know that this year’s T-shirt incorporates a collage of the best designs since 2000. There are always plenty of attractions for the kids, too, at this all-ages fixture on the Austin calendar of events.
