First off, my apoligies for being absent on the boards recently. I had a bout with some nasty virus that had me laid out for a while. That and trying to get caught up at work has left me little to blog away.

At any rate, according to the Statesman, MTV’s The Real World is set to come to Austin. I guess for some this is a good thing. I suppose the cast and crew will spend some money here, and Austin will be showcased as a good place to live. But in reality, I’m not all that thrilled with this announcement. I suppose it might be better to say I’m ambivalent, but I can’t work up any excitement.

What say the rest of you? Good? Bad? Eh?

Also, for those new to the issue, the news site www.truthout.org ran an excellent blog on Congressional hearings about voter fraud across the country. A blog on the hearing and a report on the hearing were filed by managing editor of truthout, William Rivers Pitt. “Weapons of Mass Deception,” a film from media critic Danny Schechter, plays at Dobie Theater. The Chicago Reader says “Veteran independent media analyst Danny Schechter presents a comprehensive and devastating critique of the TV news networks’ complacency and complicity in the war on Iraq. The video begins with a parody of Apocalypse Now that’s as funny as anything by Michael Moore, but Schechter means business, and this quickly turns to a rigorous dissection of economic and political factors that have turned our major media outlets into conduits for Pentagon ‘militainment’.”
Location: Dobie Theater, 21st and Guadalupe. Showtimes and ticket
information available from theater.

Wednesday, December 8, at 7:30 pm
Globalize Liberation Roadshow
David Solnit, editor of “Globalize Liberation: How to Uproot the Sytem and Build a Better World” (City Lights 2004), will be in Austin as part of the North American Globalize Liberation Roadshow. The roadshow is traveling across the country, doing public events, popular education theater, skills workshops, media interviews, and support for local organizing. In Austin, David Solnit will be joined by local activists and performers and will use interactive popular education theater with art and visuals to explain the idea of New Radicalism and to stimulate discussion. He will also discuss some of the many tactics, strategies, and organizing tools from his book.

So, I was flying this past weekend. I was flying on everyone’s favorite, Southwest Airlines. I know they get a bad rap from time to time, but I actually have kudos for them. I was late arriving to the airport for my return flight. Because I arrived with my check-in luggage less than 30 minutes from scheduled departure, my bag didn’t make it on the plane.

Fast forward to ABIA. All the bags come down the ramp and onto the luggage tilt-a-whirl. Mine isn’t there. I enter the SW baggage office and deal with the helpful and friendly Jennifer. The next guy dealt with someone far less helpful and friendly. I lucked out.

I was given updates on the progress of things during the day, and finally, late in the afternoon my bag had arrived. Too bad I was on my way somewhere, and wouldn’t be home for delivery. I offered to come pick it up, since the airport wasn’t too far out of my way. For my trouble, I was given a $50 travel voucher. (When’s that next trip?!) I also got to see the lovely and very friendly and helpful Jennifer – go me!

So, thanks to the nice folks at Southwest, a bad ending to my good weekend was averted.
