The wife and I caught Eddie Izzard’s first show at The Paramount last night and it was everything we hoped it would be and more. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to. I only wish I had went ahead and sprung for the more expensive seats because Eddie is worth it. He has two more shows tonight and tomorrow although it wouldn’t surprise me if they were sold out. Brilliant, genius and spleen-bursting funny. We’re both quite star struck. We totally want to hang out with Eddie Izzard. We want him to come over for a meal and play some Rock Band.

And to top it off, he had at least a 10 minute bit about one of my wife’s absolute favorite things in the world: giraffes. Come back again Eddie! If I had the money I’d go back for a second show!

Eddie Izzard will be performing for three nights, June 6, 7, 8 at The Paramount Theater here in Austin! If you haven’t heard of Eddie, he is, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant, intelligent and hilarious comedians ever. I’m always surprised at how many people I meet are indeed not only familiar, but in fact die hard fans of his. His humor is simultaneously absurd and cerebral tackling many subjects such as history, bigotry (Eddie likes to wear women’s clothes), movies, love, flags, monkeys with banjos, royalty being attacked by crazy dogs, Star Wars, riding a Vespa and coolly saying “Ciao”, murderous dictators and oh so much more.

Tickets go on sale March 16 at 10 a.m. here. Prices range from $40-$72.50.

For anyone who might not know, Velvet Revolver consists of Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum from Guns N’ Roses, along with Scott Weiland who was the vocalist for Stone Temple Pilots. Dave Kushner is the other guitar player in the band who always seems to get completely overlooked since he wasn’t part of a super famous previous band.

They have become one of my favorite bands. They really do sound like a perfect mix of GNR and STP to me. We saw them last time they came through here and they put on a great show.

It is once again time for NaNoWriMo. Every November people join together to face the challenge of writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. It’s all about silencing your inner editor and just breaking down the creative walls even if you just spew random crap. Check out the details at the link above and sign up. Thee will be a midnight write-in at The Dragon’s Lair tonight for people participating so if you sign up and want to go start writing with other Austin NaNo’ers head on down.

You can have previous ideas or outlines but you can’t actually have anything written before midnight tonight so no continuing or finishing up old projects (well not officially with NaNo anyway, but no one says you can’t use November to kick yourself into gear finishing up some project).

I was one of the lucky few who got tickets to go see Friday’s screening of The Nines at the Alamo with John August (the writer/director) and Ryan Reynolds (the star) live in attendance, and since Ryan’s kinda the love of my life (along with some other guys) I was MORE than happy to go.

John and Ryan gave a brief talk/explanation of the movie beforehand and once the film was over, I had a million questions for the Q&A we all though was going to be next. To our horror when the lights went up a lady was standing in the front of the house telling us that there was supposed to be a Q&A but Ryan wanted to leave, and since John was traveling with him he had to leave too. BOO! Why did we all pay extra money to see your movie if you won’t let us ask about it, and why couldn’t Ryan just hang around for 30 minutes after? Sixth street’s not going anywhere, buddy. Bad form.

I wish there was some way to get ahold of John August, though. I really liked his movie.

Michael Barnes at the Statesman has reported that beloved Austin actor Joe York has died in his home in Brooklyn. Joe was most recently seen in Zach Scott’s production of Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I saw and briefly wrote about. Joe was an electrifying presence on the stage and I regret that I only got to see him once, but once was enough to have his image burned in my memory to this day. A great artist has been lost today, but his art lives on, and he will be missed.

Last night I went out with my friend Becky to Beerland to see my friend’s band play. We thought the music would start around nineish so we get there……and the only thing on stage is a semi-nude lady with big feather fans.

Ohhhhh-kay.

It turns out we had stumbled in on Dr. Sketchy, which involves drawing and drinking once a month, usually at Beerland. Pretty cool, guys. Now that I know they exist I may show up with my sketchpad next time.

Becky and I hung around the bar until the first band showed up, then we moved to a table closer to the stage. I apologize for not knowing the band’s name but they were rockers from Beaumont and, from the sound of it they were a last-minute add to the lineup. But they were really good, loud but still listenable, and I wish I knew who they were so I could go see them again.

Next up were the Jungle Rockers, and when we saw them loading an upright bass and conga drums onto the stage we knew we were in for something awesome. Sure enough the Jungle Rockers are a rockabillyesque band reminiscent of the stray cats and there was a fair bit of shimmying going on in the crowd. Seemed like they were well-known among the crowd and they sounded great- I really want to see them again soon.

Finally Sons of Hercules took the stage and blew my mind. Frank Pugliese’s an amalgamation of every Rolling Stone, a writhing, yelling banshee of a lead singer backed by blasting beats and roaring rock n’ roll. It was so intense I had to go to the back for some air but still, by all accounts they were badass. Awesome band- shame all their shows are in San Antonio for awhile… watch that myspace and the second they come back, plan to check them out.

All in all it was a great night for a little live music :)
