SxSW: meet the locals southside

Those seeking to strike up a quick acquaintance or perhaps even indulge in a mild flirtation, and at no great monetary investment, should check out some of the following: the 24-hour H-E-B at South Congress and Oltorf, the free swimmiing pool at Stacy Park, Jo’s outdoor coffee joint on South Congress, the Pit for breakfast or for for ‘que, the Whip In convenience and liquor store, the breakfast line at the Magnolia Cafe, the leash-free Norwood Park to meet people with canine companions, Home Slice (free music next weekend) or Southside Flying Pizza (has southside delivery service and was a great hit at the precinct conventions), and Doc’s Motorworks for an outdoor sit-down space with beer. I’ve included mostly places reachable on foot or via the ‘Dillo or other Capital Metro transportation. I know that many are in town without a rental car or a friend with a vehicle and that many are crashing in the establishments of friends, relatives, or even strangers who have opened their homes. These are all south of the river. This is mostly daylight stuff, so if the previous night was late, it’s best to shade the eyes from the horrible brightness of the sun. There’s plenty of people-watching available and anyone will find lots of places to shop (for example, Tesoros or Allens Boots), but these will be heavy on tourists during SxSW and the rodeo. It wouldn’t hurt to stop in at RunTex and ask about places other than the Hike & Bike trail; everyone will have an opinion. For those flirtations that lead to more, it’s good to know that beautiful bouquets of real flowers grown in the nearby Hill Country are available at the Farm to Market store.

SXSW Planning

Three things of note for those traveling to Austin in the next two weeks for SXSW.

  1. Weather – Looks like we’re going to have another small cold front later this week before most people arrive and then start a warming trend through the middle of next week and the start of the Music portion of SXSW. It’ll fairly cold Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, but we’ll really start warming up Sunday and into early next week, eventually reaching the high 50s at night and low 80s during the day. Those coming for Interactive will need a jacket. Those in for Music, not so much. Locally, you should watch Jim Spencer on KXAN (the NBC affiliate) or if you have access to TimeWarner cable, Burton Fitzsimmons on News8Austin, the local 24 hour news channel.
  2. Maps – Those using Google Maps for navigation, be careful when using the the satellite feature. Google’s satellite photos of Austin are very out of date. As near as I can tell, the ones of downtown are from late 2003 or early 2004. If you look, City Hall, the Frost Bank building and the Hilton near the Convention Center are all still under construction in those photos.
  3. Parties – Jeremy’s got a good map of the SXSW Interactive parties. Austin360 has a good list of the side parties for the whole festival.
