Polkas, huapangos, cumbias

People will dance all these and more, including waltzes and schottisches. The best polka dancers will take home some money on Sunday. For the benefit of the Greater East Austin Youth League, there’s wonderful music to be heard at this multi-day annual event, beginning on Thursday, el cinco de mayo itself, right through until the last note dies away at the end of the conjunto festival on Sunday.

Here are favorites: Thursday, 5 May, 7:30 pm, Joel Guzman; Friday, 6 May, 7:30 pm, Eddie Gonzalez, 8:30 pm, K1; Saturday, 7 May, 1 pm, Eddie "Lalo" Torres; 7 pm, Joe Jama; 9 pm, Ruben Ramos and the Texas Revolution. And for the Sunday conjunto portion: 12:45 pm, Los Texas Wranglers; 2 pm, Santiago Jimenez; 3:30 pm, Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers; 5 pm, Nicky Snick Villarreal; 6:30 pm, Johnny Degollado; 8:45 pm, Los Dos Gilbertos (all on the Firsta Stage). Other conjunto favorites: Thursday, 5 May, Jaime y Los Chamacos; Friday, 6 May, 5:15 pm, Joe Jama; 9 pm, Roberto Pulido y Los Clasicos; and Saturday, 7 May, 9 pm, La Tropa F. La Tropa F goes above and beyond, because these people play everything.

There’s beer for the adults, and the conjunto festival on Sunday is a wonderful event for children. Under the age of 10, admission is free. The music is not too loud for little ears, there’s food, there’s shade, there are rides and games. Take your blankets and lawn chairs along. Expect to pay for parking.
