Ransom Center To Acquire Deep Throat Notes
Now that we’ve learned Deep Throat is former FBI officer Mark Felt, UT’s Harry Ransom Center has made the news again by announcing it will be acquiring the Deep Throat notes from former Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Originally, Woodward had planned to keep the identity of Deep Throat a secret until Felt died, but this week Felt decided to come out to the public in a Vanity Fair article arranged by his San Francisco lawyer John D. O’Connor.
Under the radar, the Ransom Center, whose acquisitions are funded by private investors, has been on an acquisition rampage, recently paying $2.5 million to Norman Mailer for his notes and documents (500 boxes worth). Mailer cited a few reasons for his decision to bequeath his archives to the Ransom Center:
In an e-mail exchange with the New York Times, Mailer, 82 and living in Provincetown, Mass., cited several reasons for choosing the University of Texas, including a strong bond he forged with his fellow soldiers, many from Texas, in the South Pacific during World War II.
