Rivalry in giveaways

Using figures of speech drawn from the world of poker (a practice rivaling the popularity of Texas Hold’Em itself), the Business Week issue of September 12 devotes five of six columns on a two-page spread to the freebie contest between Austin and Albany, New York, for a Samsung chip-fab plant that may or may not ever be built in either location.

A Poker Game for Samsung’s Chips” (by Mark Morrison) characterizes the Austin-Travis County offers as “big money in a state that traditionally hasn’t had to spend much to attract businesses and one where a lot of folks consider such incentives unseemly corporate welfare at a time when state finances are tight.”
