Same Trail, More Lights

Blazing GloryThe 2005 edition of the Trail of Lights kicked off last night. Well, technically it started Saturday night with the Trail of Lights 5k. Just like last year, I forgot about the 5k until the voice of That Guy Who Emcees Every Running Event in Austin came booming across Central and South Austin with an hour or so of muffled motivational commentary. Somehow his voice seemed to carry a lot more than Chris Martin’s did during ACL Fest, which is a shame because I actually _wanted_ to hear Coldplay from my house.

The holiday alarm went off again Sunday night, when amplified carols announced the trail’s pedestrian opening. This time, we got off our duffs and dove hip deep into the 40-year tradition. There’s something to be said for strolling peacefully through the trail on slower week nights, but the opening night rush adds some welcome spectacle to the event. Even the goofiest, most dated display seems fresh when tots rush up in excitement to absorb the show. Conversely, nothing kills the joy faster than a Sullen Teen testing his newfound sarcasm at the expense of a stale Charlie Brown cut-out. Rats.

The Trail of Lights is open nightly from 7-10pm until December 23rd.
