Local daily’s affiliate scoops it

When the free weekly ¡ahora sí! was new it relied heavily upon translated versions of material that had first appeared in the daily. The on-line presence was no more than an image of that week’s cover.

This is changing, and for the better. More than the cover may be seen via the Web. There’s a growing number of original stories. For example, in the most recent issue is news about El Pollo Regio that, if it did appear in the daily or elsewhere, had not otherwise come to my attention.

According to the story (byline Josefina Villicaña) seven workers now or formerly employed there seek thousands of dollars in overtime for which they allege they have not been paid. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act there are questions of fact as to the total annual net earnings of the business and also whether the individual locations constitute one business or whether some have additional, different proprietors.

Representing the workers in their cause is an attorney with Austin’s Equal Jusice Center, which champions exploited immigrant workers.
