A Return to Elegance

Umlauf VotivesI often think there are too few events where white cotton suits and Panama hats are appropriate. If only we had a local Gatsby party, then Austinites could harken back to a time when consumption and superficiality were unabashedly embraced … even more than they are today, I mean.

We may no longer have flappers or Model A’s, but Austin does have its own garden party that celebrates socializing while also supporting a good cause. The annual Umlauf Garden Party is happening next Thursday (4/27), bringing art, food, and charity together in the (relatively) cool Spring evening. My wife and I went last year and had a great time noshing on good food, swilling decent wine, and dancing to the Nash Hernandez Orchestra. There’s also a silent auction with lots of goodies up for grabs.

Tickets are bit pricey ($70 in advance, $85 at the door) but that’s just motivation to sample all the tasty food and wine that will be provided by area merchants. All proceeds and raffles go to support Umlauf, so your donation fills your conscience as well as your gullet. Tickets are no longer available at Umlauf, but can still be purchased at various Twin Liquors locations. They may be getting a little scarce, as the event sells out every year.

More info is listed here, including links to the Twin Liquors sales locations.
