Dining Around with Dad
My dad came into town this weekend for Labor day and as usual the name of the game was food. Food food food. First stop- meeting up with friends for dinner at South Congress Cafe, our first time there. The Very Bleu salad was drizzled with roasted pecans, gorgonzola crumbles and dressing, and garnished with two little quail eggs. I followed it up with the crab enchiladas, and then the carmelized banana cheesecake. The cheesecake was light and fluffy, almost souffleish, with a chopped-coconut crust. It was, hands down, the best cheesecake I’ve ever had. Delicious. It should be noted that of all the things South Congress Cafe has nailed down, the taste of the food is second only to its presentation. I hated to stir my plates because everything was just so pretty.
The next day we did Magnolia South and another favorite of ours, Romeo’s, with my brother and his girlfriend. I’m a sucker for Romeo’s bread and their Tortellini di Parma. We also had the stuffed mushrooms, spiced just right and filled with a blend of cheeses and shrimp. MMMMmmmmmm. The next morning, we went back to Magnolia for another easy breakfast, reading the paper over the Royal toast and a T-Rex omelet. With sour cream. And black beans. And toast. Our poor waiter! Then dad drove me to school and kissed me goodbye. It was a lovely visit with him :o)
You won’t find me eating at South Austin Cafe after they thumbed their noses at Austin’s building code…illegally building their deck, continuing construction despite being served with THREE stop work notices, and building over a public right of way. Despite being told to demolish their illegal construction, they continue (a year later) to waste my tax money in court saying basically, “Well we already did it so, hey, give us a pass.”
No one who so flagrantly acts as if they are above the laws that the rest of us have to follow deserves my business.
