You can’t stop the beat!
Reagan and I caught the opening night of Hairspray at the UT Performing Arts Center on Tuesday and I was completely blown away. Brooklynn Pulver shines as Tracy and amazingly enough rocks at dancing as much as she does at singing. Round Rock’s own Jarret Mallon was a youthful, hip Corny Collins and we should be proud of him!
The musical lacks some of the sauciness of the movie that spawned it but it’s not like John Waters is family fare. However, a majority of the jokes were still met with raucous laughter, but would be glossed over by younger ears. The beautiful candy-colored sets and fun, flouncing costumes screamed “Welcome to the Sixties!” just about as loudly as the song by that name. Hairspray is a great time at the theater and you guys should go check it out before it leaves Austin on the 17th.
