Local firm collecting nationwide and attracting national notice

Austin law firm Linebarger Goggan has been much in the news lately as one of three entities awarded contracts by the Federal government to serve as collection agents against delinquent taxpayers. This is the outfit that has been lobbying, unsuccessfully thus far, to collect unpaid property taxes on behalf of Travis County. The original announcement of the IRS award was in March, but commentary has continued to proliferate since, as people become more aware of this pilot project outsourcing government tax collection. On the newstands right now in the current Business Week (on-line subscription may be required; September 25, 2006; page 82; byline Howard Gleckman) is the latest national coverage: The Eyes of Taxes Are Upon You (subhead: IRS deadbeats beware. A law firm of Austin-based “bounty hunters” is on your trail). Ken Oden, former Travis County attorney now with Linebarger is not mentioned in the piece; Bill Aleshire, former Travis County judge and opponent of the local tax-collection proposal, is. I think it’s funny that the Linebarger firm uses the publicans.com domain.
