Funny Redheads Unite!

Carol Burnett, artifact of my childhood (even at 21), is coming to the UT Performing Arts Center on Tuesday.

When I was young my mom and I would chill out in the living room and watch Nick at Nite before I went to bed and I quickly learned the names of all the great comedic actresses: Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Marie, Lucille Ball, Cloris Leachman, Betty White (the Happy Homemaker!), Valerie Harper, and of course, Carol Burnett. That woman cracked me and my mom up to tears, always.

So imagine my surprise when I hear she’s coming to the PAC. (Full disclosure: I have PAC ties so this was awhile ago.) I thought to myself Carol Burnett? Seriously? …..huh, I thought. I can’t believe people still like her, it’s been ages. Right? But then the next thing I know, she’s being discussed on Project Runway. She’s on Desperate Housewives. The woman apparently LOVES Entourage, so who knows where you’ll see her next!

As I watch theater troupes pop up around Austin, and its theater scene grows more and more and we have all this amazing homegrown talent bursting forth (Helloooo American Fiesta, Helloooo Salvage Vanguard Theater’s National Tour), I can’t think of a more relevant person to take to an Austin stage. Here’s a woman who’s been through so much, who worked her way up the ladder, whos climbed her way up the ladder to “legendary” by virtue of her talent and innovation. What more could you want in an inspiration? Go see her show and get your mind blown by a genius at work.
I myself can’t make it, but I’m fairly certain she’d accept my excuse: I have rehearsal.
