Fine and free jazz tonight
A 16-piece ensemble including Concordia and community instrumentalists under the direction of Max Lyon plays a great program of jazz classics arranged for a large aggregation like this, seldom heard these days when it’s cheaper and easier to round up a small combo. Sit in comfort for an hour at no charge and hear the Concordia University Jazz Emsemble go to town with fine arrangements and soloists just as fine. This is really convenient for those dining downtown or on South Congress after work. Remove the events of an ordinary Monday from your mind and just settle back and listen. The place is Grace United Methodist Church, 205 East Monroe (just a block east of South Congress), and the time is 7 pm. On the program are favorites composed by the greats. Expect saxophone, trumpet, and trombone solos, not overlooking piano and percussion. Just one of the reasons to love Austin is that people make music for the love of it, purely for the pleasure of being heard by informed audiences with open ears.
