Under the trees and away from the noise of traffic, here’s a chance to hear old-fashioned music the old-fashioned way, truly unamplified and played by Austin friends and neighbors purely for their own enjoyment and that of their listeners. No money changes hands here, and it’s a wonderful family occasion. People may bring their own seating or blankets, and children are free to scamper at will.

All this takes place tomorrow evening, one day before the Glorious Fourth, two blocks east of South Congress. There’s no bandstand, but Grace United Methodist Church has made its little gem of a bower available to the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble, set to play beginning at 7 pm, and to the Austin Wonder Brass, which will play immediately thereafter. Here’s an entry from the first time I heard the Wonder Brass; the photo shows Aunt Grace’s Garden, which has even more amenities now.

It’s easy to walk or bicycle or take a bus or ‘Dillo up or down Congress (or even park a motor vehicle nearby, despite the fact that July 3 will be a First Thursday on South Congress): Aunt Grace’s Garden is at the corner of East Monroe and Brackenridge. This is a weather-permitting event.
